Neurology Q & A

What is neurology?

Neurology involves the study, diagnosis, and treatment of nervous system disorders and diseases. The nervous system includes your brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves (the nerves outside your brain and spinal cord).

Because your nervous system acts as your body’s command center, disorders in any part of the system can lead to health and functional problems that affect your whole life.

When should I see a neurology specialist?

Your internal medicine provider at Boulevard Medical HealthCare/Tender Medical Care, P.C., may recommend that you see a neurology specialist if you experience a medical event like a stroke or have problems such as:

  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Tremors
  • Fainting
  • Seizures
  • Limb weakness
  • Movement difficulties
  • Unsteady gait or other irregular walking patterns
  • Memory problems
  • Speech problems
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Balance problems
  • Vertigo
  • Facial asymmetry (drooping on one side of the face)

Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and many other neurological disorders can feature some of these symptoms.

How are neurological disorders diagnosed?

Diagnosis of neurological disorders can be a complex process. Your neurology specialist generally starts by evaluating your symptoms and performing a neurological exam. This exam evaluates your reflexes, coordination, and strength.

Most people with neurological symptoms need specialized testing, with a few examples including blood vessel imaging, MRI, CT scan, sleep testing, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, muscle activity testing, or evaluations of the electrical activity in the brain.

What treatments do neurology specialists offer?

Neurology specialists provide nonsurgical treatment of nervous system disorders. Your specific treatment depends on the condition, whether it’s stable or progressing, and your wishes. Some of the treatments you may need include:

  • Antidepressants
  • Disease-modifying drugs
  • Anti-seizure medications
  • Blood thinners
  • Dopamine-producing drugs
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy

Your neurologist monitors and treats your neurological disorder in the long term to help you stay as healthy and active as possible.

Some neurological issues may require surgery, for example, removing a brain tumor, in which case your neurologist refers you to a neurosurgeon. Your neurologist continues to manage your condition long after surgery.
