Gynecology Q&A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is a field of medicine dedicated to women’s health, especially the reproductive system. Specialized areas of healthcare that fall under gynecology include:

  • Menstruation
  • Family planning
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Infertility
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Hormone disorders
  • Cancers of the breasts and female reproductive system

What can I expect from my gynecology appointment?

Well-woman exams (gynecological exams) allow your provider to conduct comprehensive physical examinations to prevent serious health issues. They also help your provider detect any problems early on.

During regular well-woman exams, your provider establishes a baseline of your general health, which helps detect potential issues before they become more serious.

Essential aspects of your well-woman exam are breast and pelvic examinations. This gynecology portion of your physical allows your provider to evaluate your reproductive health while conducting routine cervical cancer screenings with a Pap smear and testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear (Pap test) is a procedure to test for cervical cancer. This type of cancer was once the leading cause of cancer death for women. These numbers have significantly decreased due to early detection through Pap smears.

Your provider uses a speculum to access your cervix at the top of your vagina during your Pap smear. Gently scraping your cervix for cells, your provider sends them to the lab for analysis. A Pap smear is very quick, and it's not a painful procedure.

What tests are included in gynecology services?

In addition to a Pap smear, or Pap test, your provider may order other tests if you’re sexually active, such as sexually transmitted disease (STD) and HPV screenings. Regular screenings are vital for your whole body and reproductive health, especially because many STDs don’t have symptoms.

Other gynecology tests and procedures may include the following:

  • Pregnancy test
  • Cervical Biopsy
  • Endometrial Biopsy
  • Colposcopy
  • Pelvic Ultrasound
  • Mammogram
  • Breast scan, MRI, or ultrasound

Many women have hormone imbalances that impact their menstrual cycle and fertility. Your provider may order hormone testing or diagnostic imaging in this case.
